Merger Approved for The Northwestern Water and Sewer District and Henry County Regional Water and Sewer District

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio, – The merger between the Northwestern Water and Sewer District (The District) and Henry County Regional Water and Sewer District is now official.  Late last week, the final step in the merger process took place when petitions for changes in both districts’ boards of trustees were approved by both the Wood County Common Pleas Court and the Henry County Common Pleas Court.  The newly merged district takes on the name of the surviving Northwestern Water and Sewer District.

“The merger between these two districts offers improved water quality, efficient and affordable long-term operations, and allows expanded economic development opportunity in Henry County,” said District President Jerry Greiner.

NEW BOARD STRUCTURE
By law, both districts needed to petition the courts to change their board structure.  The District will add a tenth seat to its current nine-seat board.  The tenth board member will be appointed by the Henry County Commissioners to serve a three-year term.  The Village of McClure will be added to the District’s current 13-member municipalities.  Providence Township in Lucas County will be added to The District’s current 20 township members.  The municipal members jointly nominate and name three board members, as do the township members.   The remaining three board members are named by the Wood County Commissioners.

IMPROVED CUSTOMER SERVICE
The District will now officially serve approximately 500 additional customers, primarily in the Village of McClure.  The merger increases The District’s territory to most of Henry County plus Providence Township in Lucas County.  The Northwestern Water and Sewer District has been overseeing maintenance, operations, billing, and customer service since July upon request of the Henry County Regional Water and Sewer District.  According to Henry County Regional Water and Sewer District Clerk/Treasurer Amy Behrman, “This merger makes sense because The Northwestern Water and Sewer District has the resources to serve a large territory and has already improved water and sewer service for Henry County residents.”

The Northwestern Water and Sewer District delivers water and sewer services to over 20,000 customers in Wood, Sandusky, Hancock and now Henry County.

Cook & Clean Responsibly This Thanksgiving

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio, – The Northwestern Water and Sewer District (The District) is reminds those preparing meals to be aware of what goes down your drain.  Fats, oils, and grease can solidify and cause blockages in your pipes that can lead to backups, can clog your plumbing, damage wastewater treatment systems, and can cause environmental issues.  The District reminds you that when it comes to fats, oils, and grease: Can it, cool it and throw it away!

Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) come from meats, butter and margarine, lard, food scraps, sauces, salad dressings, dairy products and cooking oil. When FOG is warm, it’s easy to pour down the drain; but as it cools, it hardens and can cause sewer pipes to clog. This can lead to a Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) where raw sewage can back up into your home, lawn, neighborhood, and streets.

The solution: allow fat, oils, and grease to cool and solidify in an aluminum can and then dispose of it in your garbage.  Also, use a disposable paper towel to wipe off greasy pans and dishes to remove build-up before rinsing or placing in the dishwasher.

Remember, when it comes to fats, oils, and grease: Can it, Cool it, and throw it away!

District Operators to Help restore Water Service in the Bahamas

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio, – Two licensed operators from Northwestern Water and Sewer District (The District) have returned to Northwest Ohio following their volunteer mission to assist in water and wastewater services on Grand Bahama Island.  While there, the pair worked to locate fresh water wells on the island that were infiltrated by saltwater following Hurricane Dorian this September.   The team’s trip was organized by Operators Without Borders, a non-profit organization that assists with post-disaster recovery for water and wastewater utilities in the Caribbean.

Ohio EPA licensed operators Todd Saums and Tom McGrain used their skills and expertise to scan for new well sites, then dig and test wells.  The pair worked with a team of hydrologists from Water & Earth Sciences, Inc., as well as members from the Grand Bahama Utility Company and Grand Bahama Port Authority.

According to Saums, “Everyone was very appreciative of the work we did.  Everywhere we went everyone asked us what we were doing and thanked us.”

Their journey took place, Sunday, November 10th through Monday, November 18th.  Fellow operators and members of the Ohio Water Environment Association (OWEA) and Baker and Associates have raised money to fund their trip.
