New water line to boost southern Wood Co.

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Already under construction, a second water line transmission pipeline will soon be in place to support the long-term water needs of southern Wood County, according to the Northwestern Water & Sewer District (NWWSD).

A new 10-inch sized line is being installed along SR 25 from Kramer Road (south of Bowling Green) to the Village of Portage, where it will reconnect to the current water tower.  The new line will parallel the existing 10-inch line installed in 1975.

Jerry Greiner, NWWSD president, said the expansion of water lines in southern Wood County has increased the need for redundancy, or a “back-up” line, to provide water service and ensure pressure.  Besides the communities who depend on water now, which include Portage, Cygnet, Jerry City, plus Elmwood School District; Bairdstown and Bloomdale will be connected this spring, as well.

Not only are residential needs met, but a fair amount of commercial and industrial growth has occurred since 1975, as well as improved fire flows – all supporting the need for an additional line.

The total project cost is estimated at $900,000 and will be repaid through a low interest loan from OEPA over 20 years on a revenue bond.  According to Greiner, the mild winter weather has provided “A nice window of opportunity for the contractor to get more pipe laid during the early winter and holiday weeks.”

Greiner says this is a continued investment the District has made toward the long-term viability of the south end of Wood County.  He cited other projects in which the District has invested since being formed in 1994:

  • Bloomdale water line
  • Kramer Road water line and meter pit
  • Jerry City/Cygnet water lines
  • Hoytville
  • CSX

“Utilities don’t always drive development,” Greiner said.  “However, there would be little solid investment without it.  Plus, the quality of life issues would suffer if homes were dependent on private wells and septic systems.”
