Pharmaceuticals

Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) are any products used by individuals for personal health or cosmetic reasons or used by agribusiness.

PPCPs include:

  • Prescription and over-the-counter drugs
  • Veterinary drugs
  • Fragrances
  • Cosmetics
  • Sun-screen products
  • Diagnostic agents
  • Nutraceuticals (e.g. vitamins)

Studies have shown that pharmaceuticals are present in our nation’s waterbodies. Further research suggests that certain drugs may cause ecological harm. More information regarding PPCPs can be found on the EPA’s website.
