Ten Years Ago

Ten years ago, The District looked different than it does today. I realize that may come as a surprise to some, but maybe not to others. For example, how does a public utility look different from a decade ago, if viewing it from the street or online?

We are still at the same location, with the same buildings, and mostly the same people in the same places. We are doing the same things, almost every day as we did then. Our vehicles may be newer, our computers faster, and our technology has grown into every aspect of our work. We can tell you every hour of your water use and notify you in seconds what happened! AI has made it easier to explain our operations and answer questions.

Many things have improved in our operations and customer service departments. Did I mention that we still pick up the phone in seconds with a live customer service voice on every call? That has not changed!

The statistics show how things are different. We now have:

  • 75 employees vs. 65
  • 48,905 population served vs. 42,500 (estimated)
  • 17,341 water customers vs. 14,704
  • 19,562 sewer customers vs. 16,726
  • 475 miles of water line vs. 413
  • 4,054 fire hydrants vs. 3,613
  • 14 water storage facilities vs. 7
  • 22 Watersheds & bulk water stations vs. 13
  • 373 miles of sewer line vs. 332
  • 14 sewer plants vs. 12
  • 5,885 sewer manholes vs. 4,996

You get the picture now after reviewing the “hard” assets, the things “in the ground” that we have built and installed to serve customers adequately and efficiently. Some were built by developers for their needs but most of them we designed, we built, we inspected, and we tested to be sure they met our standards to serve the growing system. We maintain these items every day and fix those that break. It is a big effort, but seventy-five of us do it well…. even though some of us are ten years older!
